Teams test mettle in Dragon Boat Races - Ten teams test their mettle in Dragon Boat Races on Lake Gregory

CRESTLINE - You needed an abacus, a slide rule or maybe even a computer to crunch the numbers Saturday at the second annual Dragon Boat Races at Lake Gregory Regional Park in Crestline.

At the start there were 10 teams with 12 rowers each. The rowers ranged in age from Tanner Recendez, 8, of San Bernardino, to Aloa Agostino, 81, a former merchant mariner from Corona del Mar whose blood pressure is 120 over 80. Each boat had a drummer to beat a tempo for the oarsmen and a coxswain to steer. The rowers came from as far away as Arizona and as near as Crestline.

The two boats, each 20 feet long and weighing more than 700 pounds, were donated by a Long Beach dragon boat group. The course was 250 meters long. The rowers were apportioned by size: the smallest in front and the biggest and strongest in the rear to balance the weight.
