Inland locksmiths finding plenty of work re-keying foreclosed homes -

The freefalling housing market has not pulled Inland area locksmiths down with it. Many are keeping busy with jobs changing locks and keys at foreclosed homes across the region.

In their trucks and vans that function as mobile workshops, locksmiths are roaming San Bernardino and Riverside counties, performing jobs known in their trade and the housing industry as REOs.

The three letters stand for Real Estate-Owned. Plainly put, these are foreclosed homes, or properties repossessed by banks or lenders after the homeowner defaulted on a home loan.

"It's unbelievable. In the last couple of months, I couldn't tell you how many we've done," said David Carter, a locksmith and owner of Dib's Safe and Lock Service in San Bernardino.

"They're all over the place."
