Sheriff's deputies were searching for an SUV that was stolen from the Riverside National Cemetery on Saturday afternoon with the owner's dog inside.
Rebel, a 16-year-old wolf malamute mix, cannot walk because she has hip dysplasia and needs medication, owner Mary Michael, of Hemet, said.
Michael worried that her case would not get much attention from law enforcement because it was just a dog that had been stolen.
"It's not just any dog," Michael said, sobbing. "It's my Rebel."
"It's like losing a child," said her husband, Craig Michael.
Sheriff's Sgt. Todd Kelly said the department quickly put out a broadcast to surrounding agencies to be on the lookout for the vehicle, which was stolen about 2 p.m.
But it took a long time to get a deputy to the scene of the cemetery on Van Buren Boulevard because they were busy with a missing person case, Kelly said
