Government gives Moreno Valley almost $2.4 million -

MORENO VALLEY - The city of Moreno Valley will receive almost $2.4 million in federal funding this fiscal year for community development and affordable-housing programs, officials said Monday.

The funding will come in the form of community development block grants, housing funds and down-payment assistance for first-time home buyers, U.S. Housing and Urban Development Assistant Secretary Susan Peppler said at a news conference at the Moreno Valley Conference and Recreation Center.

The federal government gives cities the discretion on how to spend the community development block grant funds, she said. Moreno Valley has used the funding, among other things, to put in sidewalks and other street improvements in neighborhoods that need them, Peppler said.

"Who better to know how to use the funds than local government?" said Peppler, a former Redlands mayor.
