Menifee changes bus service; some children now walk long distances -

Unlike a year ago, Liliana and Yuliana Lopez now walk more than a mile from their house to Menifee Valley Middle School rather than ride the bus. Like dozens of students, they no longer have a choice.

The sisters' walk to school takes them down Murrieta Road, one of Menifee's most highly traveled streets that offers no shade or sidewalks.

Scores of middle school students in the Menifee Union School District are no longer eligible for student busing because district officials, in an effort to save money, lengthened the distance a student is expected to walk from 1.25 miles to 2 miles.

The move cut several bus routes, which added up to an $800,000 saving from last year's transportation expenses, said Dave Brown, the district's transportation director.
