An advisory commission unanimously recommended Wednesday that the State Board of Education deny an appeal of the Ronald Reagan Charter School.
Members of the Advisory Commission on Charter Schools voted 8-0 in Sacramento against the petition that sought to convert the Lake Elsinore Unified School District elementary school into a kindergarten- through eighth-grade charter school. The state board will vote at its November meeting.
Throughout the process the biggest stumbling block has been the charter's budget.
Petitioners overestimated the school's revenue, creating a budget deficit of at least $304,000 the first year to $1.6 million by its fifth year.
The miscalculation was caused when petitioners used state funding averages instead of the formula for conversion charters, which receive less.
Based on Lake Elsinore's figures, Reagan would receive $3,522 in average daily attendance versus the more than $5,000 given to other charters
