At least eight people were vying as of Wednesday for three seats on the Lake Elsinore City Council in the November election.
The field could grow to 11 today if three more candidates qualify for the ballot, city officials said.
The announcement by current council members Genie Kelley and Robert Schiffner that they would not seek re-election likely generated the increased interest, City Clerk Vivian Munson said.
It is the first time since 2001 that there are two open council seats up for grabs. That year, voters elected current Councilmen Thomas Buckley and Daryl Hickman.
Schiffner cited age and Kelley cited the desire to spend more time with family as reasons for not seeking a third and fourth term, respectively.
If there were 11 candidates, it would be the second-largest field in 10 years. Twelve people sought election in 1999, when Schiffner was elected.
