Jurupa school district questioned about weed spraying -

GLEN AVON - Jurupa school officials are rethinking their practice of spraying weed killer during school hours after a parent complained that her daughter had a severe allergic reaction from an herbicide sprayed on the Patriot High School campus.

Sandra Zaharias, the mother of a Patriot High School student, told the Jurupa Unified School District Board of Education at their Nov. 2 meeting that she believed the district had violated California's Healthy Schools Act, which requires the posting of notices 24 hours before any pesticide or herbicide is applied.

She said her daughter became ill after Roundup -- a commonly used weed killer -- was used on the campus during school hours.

Superintendent Elliott Duchon confirmed that Roundup was used during school hours on Oct. 27, the day Zaharias' daughter fell ill, but said it was a limited application and no students were near the spraying.
