Public hearing set on Corona proposal for tiered water rates -

More than 30 letters protesting a new way of charging for water in Corona were sent to city officials calling the system unfair.

The city is holding a public hearing at 7 p.m. today on the proposed tiered water rate structure that it says is designed to encourage water conservation and decrease costs for many residents and businesses at a time when major water reservoirs are at historic lows.

If the council passes the item tonight, it would come back for a second vote in two weeks, and the rates would become effective April 26.

The letters described the change as unfair toward low-income families, many of which have large households and therefore use more water, and said it lacked an appeals process. Some letters described the proposal as a mechanism for the city to make money and said the adjustments provided don't work.
