Longtime Jurupa Unified school board member to retire -

GLEN AVON - John Chavez, who has served more than 30 years on the Jurupa Unified School District board of education and who is believed to be the longest-serving active school board member in Riverside County, is retiring.

Chavez, 73, opted not to run for re-election and will leave the board when his term ends Dec. 3.

Chavez said Wednesday that it was time for a change.

"I feel very strong that we need to have different ideas and different input from different people," Chavez said. "We've made a lot of strides in the years I've been on the board. We don't always agree, but we did agree to work together."

According to school district records, Chavez was elected to the board in 1975. He failed to win re-election in 1979 but was appointed to fill a vacancy in March 1981. He has won voter approval in every election since then   Read Full Article...
