MORENO VALLEY - For adults, there's merit pay and business profits.
For some teenagers, doing math problems can mean economic rewards, too -- everything from gift cards to a new iPod.
On Thursday, math whizzes at Vista Del Lago High School were honored for winning a national contest sponsored by Apangea Learning.
The program uses an online, tutoring technology featuring a combination of "intelligent" computer-animated "learning coaches" and live, certified teachers, who help youngsters through live, interactive and chat technology.
The customized program tracks individual student achievement.
About 100 students at Vista Del Lago earned the most points by working through the math problems during summer school -- almost 395,000 -- out of 100 participating high schools across the country.
They solved about 15,000 math problems. Students also increased their test scores by an average of 11
