The shortage of spaces at UC Riverside's Child Development Center, where 400 children are on the waiting list and the average wait is two years, has been a major headache for faculty members.
Child care was a key issue for Jennifer Hughes, who was three months pregnant with her son, Salvador, when she accepted a job two years ago as assistant professor of religious studies at UCR.
As part of her hiring package, the university offered her a low-interest mortgage loan.
"I said I'll swap you the mortgage for a place in the child care center," Hughes said.
Salvator's name went on the waiting list before he was even born. But his mother's foresight paid off when he got in at 5 months. The center's sibling policy means Salvador's new brother will be able to start in September
