Instructor Penelope Brown relishes the opportunity to rejuvenate burned-out nurses.
A registered nurse for 32 years, Brown teaches courses for UCR Extension in a growing subspecialty of nursing that bridges the medical and legal worlds: legal nurse consulting.
She sees it as a way to extend a nursing career that might have been stalled because of an injury or an inability to keep up with the pace and physical demands of the job.
"Here's this whole new world of opportunity to use your education and experience, and you're still impacting the quality of care a patient has received," Brown said.
On Sept. 3, UCR Extension will hold a career night called Legal Nurse Consultant Career and Information Meeting that offers a peek into this field.
"It's really only about the last 10 years that this has become a real exciting area with a lot of demand," said Brown, who has taught at UCR since 1999 and owns a consulting business called Health-Well Enterprises in Corona
