Roads, library and shelter get Loma Linda cash -

Loma Linda's public library and an emergency shelter for homeless families, along with street repairs, were winners in the city's annual competition for federal Community Development Block Grant funds.

But 11 nonprofit organizations came away empty-handed.

"There is never enough money available to divide up to meet all the needs," Mayor Stan Brauer told leaders of the service groups as they made a pitch to the City Council to get a share of the cash. "But we will attempt to do the best we can."

Loma Linda City Manager T. Jarb Thaipejr told the council that rules enforced by San Bernardino County made the job even tougher.

While the city will receive $153,272 in block grant money, he said, only $22,990, or 15 percent of it, can be used for public service programs.

The bulk of the money -- some $130,282 -- will be used to rehabilitate pavement and make other street improvements on Stewart and Benton streets and Prospect Avenue   Read Full Article...
