Rick Derringer might not be the most famous guitarist to come out of the 1970s, but you wouldn't know it by looking at his career path.
He's the phenom guitarist behind the 1970s classic rock staple "Rock and Roll Hoochie Koo," the man who discovered Weird Al Yankovic, the producer/writer/performer credited with wrestler Hulk Hogan's "I'm A Real American" theme and the face behind a hot sauce inspired by a song on his smooth jazz album.
But don't expect to hear tunes from Derringer's 2002 foray into smooth jazz when Derringer plays a free concert at Fantasy Springs Resort and Casino in Indio this weekend.
"It's the audience who keeps us on stage and those are the songs I want to play," Derringer said in a recent interview from his home in Florida. He said his smooth jazz song "Hot and Cool" and its accompanying album, "Free Ride," garnered acclaim, but it's not his usual fare for his following of classic rock fans
