YUCAIPA - As third-grader Carson Chamness eagerly awaited Chapman Heights Elementary's opening Monday morning, he admitted to being "really super nervous."
Even with his father, John, and sister Amanda, a first-grader, by his side, Carson couldn't eliminate the jitters that can be part of day one at a brand new school.
Carson was among almost 600 kindergartners through sixth-graders who scurried across a sprawling quadrangle to their classrooms and explored a multipurpose room with an outdoor stage.
Sixth-grader Haylee Bangle hadn't met her teachers yet, but she expected a "fun" day.
"I hear Mrs. (Therese) Smith and Mrs. (Melanie) Stewart are really nice teachers," said Haylee, who along with Seth, her brother in fifth grade, attended Dunlap Elementary last year.
Other students pointed to hulking earthmovers in the distance that were contouring land for a 3.5-acre park and homes that will overlook the 10-acre campus near Cramer and Chapman Heights roads
