Construction work under way on Banning High athletic complex -

Construction on a long-awaited athletic complex at Banning High School is under way.

"We've been doing grading and a lot of it," said Ken Miller, director of facilities at the Banning Unified School District.

The complex will include a swimming pool, outdoor basketball courts, a stadium with a track and baseball and softball fields. There will be a turfed area where soccer and junior varsity softball games will be played.

The stadium and pool are being built in tandem and will be completed first.

The district hopes to hold its first graduation ceremony at the stadium in June 2011, and its first football game that fall.

Home games and commencement exercises now take place at Nicolet Middle School, which, unlike the high school, has a stadium. Nicolet is the old high school.

Banning High cheerleaders Megan Sullivan and Trista Sibole, both 14, said most of their classmates are excited about the athletic complex. Trista said it will be easier to go to games at the high school than Nicolet.

The girls said they would rather cheer at the high school than the middle school.

The school district held a ceremonial groundbreaking for the athletic complex Wednesday morning on campus. Due to strong winds and low temperatures, the bulk of the ceremony was moved indoors.
