Banning approves property purchases, reservoir -

BANNING - As part of an ongoing effort to revitalize downtown Banning, the City Council on Tuesday night approved the purchase of the old San Gorgonio Inn for $1.8 million.

The inn is on Ramsey Street across from City Hall.

The council, acting as the Community Redevelopment Agency, also approved the purchase of the West Coast Electric property on South San Alessandro Street for $600,000.

City Manager Brian Nakamura said purchasing these properties will enable the city to control the type of development that occurs downtown.

He has said he hopes a developer will be interested in using the inn to open a restaurant or specialty stores, something unique to Banning.

The inn is vacant and will probably have to be demolished because of damage to the building, Nakamura said. It dates to the 1800s and has been used as a hotel and restaurant and even a training site for emergency personnel   Read Full Article...
