Let's hear it for the girls -- and for counter-programming.
In a summer full of action-packed blockbusters, a movie starring four women handily beat last weekend's top movie, "Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull."
"Sex and the City," based on the HBO show that went off the air in 2004, took the top spot nationally and regionally, raking in $55.7 million.
"We should never underestimate the clout of the female audience and the power of 'Sex and the City,' " said Paul Dergarabedian, president of box-office tracker Media By Numbers. "This is the first real surprise of the summer."
Nationally, "Sex" drubbed "Skull," making an average of $16,968 per theater compared with "Skull's" $10,788 per theater.
Regionally, however, where action movies rule, the numbers were closer: "Sex" made $14,538 per theater compared with "Skull's" $12,149 per theater.
However, considering that "Sex" is in fewer theaters than "Skull," the victory shouldn't be discounted
