Dat's a super fan - Eternal optimist John Vineyard may just see his Saints win it all

RIVERSIDE - On the opening kickoff of the opening game of the New Orleans Saints' opening season in 1967, John Gilliam returned the ball 94 yards for a touchdown.

Promises, promises.

The Saints would go on to lose that game to the Los Angeles Rams and many, many more before finally posting their first winning record 20 years later.

They wouldn't win a postseason game until 2000, 33 years after they were born, earning them a reputation as the National Football League's most hapless, mocked and cursed franchise.

In 1980 when the team started 0-14, a local sportscaster dubbed them the "Aints" and convinced legions of fans to attend games at the Louisiana Superdome with brown paper bags over their heads. The fad became an iconic freeze-frame, epitomizing life as a Saints fan.
