He never did take his eye off the NFL.
All through the glorious Pete Carroll years, the one thing that has been most disconcerting to otherwise enraptured USC fans was Carroll's ongoing love of the pro game.
He spoke glowingly of "the league," often evaluating college players by how he thought they would fare at the next level.
He ran a pro-style offense at USC, recruiting prototypical NFL quarterbacks and leaving the run-pass guys to the Oregons and the Utahs.
He remembered games he coached with the New York Jets and New England Patriots, for anecdotal purposes, as much as he recalled USC games. He always seemed to know exactly how his former Trojans were doing in Arizona, Detroit and Seattle.
And, most of all, once he led USC back to the top of the formidable NCAA heap, he allowed NFL owners who came calling each winter from Atlanta, Miami and elsewhere to flirt.
He insisted he was as happy as could be in Los Angeles, coaching the Trojans. The gushing was easy to believe
