LEFTY AND THE LOOPHOLE -

LOS ANGELES - I'm guessing if most of us weekend hackers took a pitching wedge with square grooves and a wedge with V-shaped grooves, and hit 50 golf balls with each, we couldn't tell the difference.

It's hard to imagine the concept of spinning the ball with the club face. I'm still grappling with the concept of hitting the ball with the club face. Getting the ball to do tricks on the green? Isn't it a trick just to get the ball on the green?

For people who hit most of their golf shots too long, short, left or right, Phil Mickelson's use of a 20-year-old wedge with square grooves wouldn't mean anything at all if fellow PGA tour member Scott McCarron hadn't said last week that Mickelson was cheating.
