RIVERSIDE - From the outside, the results seemed to be nothing short of baffling.
How could California Baptist University, an NAIA power in men's volleyball, knock off Long Beach State, sweep UCLA and vanquish Pepperdine -- all Division I top-10 programs -- in the span of three days ... and then get beat by UC Santa Cruz a week later?
A closer look suggests it's not all that crazy, though the incongruity of beating the Bruins and losing to the Banana Slugs, in any sport, isn't something that just any program can pull off.
The Lancers beat No. 7 Long Beach and No. 8 UCLA on a neutral court at UC Santa Barbara, and knocked off No. 4 Pepperdine in the friendly confines of Van Dyne Fieldhouse.
Santa Cruz, No. 3 in Division III, was playing on its home court, and it was the second half of a doubleheader after the Lancers had beaten Springfield (Mass.) College, which is ranked No. 2 in Division III.
"And we didn't have everybody on the bus ride," Coach Ryan McGuyre said
