SAN DIMAS - With superb play in all phases of the game, the La Verne American all-star Little League team captured the Section 3 major division title Wednesday with a 16-1 four-inning victory over the Covina National League at Marchant Park.
The win continues La Verne's impressive postseason run: It has compiled a 7-0 record in winning the District 20 and Section 3 tournaments.
La Verne advances to the Southern California Divisional Tournament's North Sub-Divisional bracket. It will open against Torrance, the Section 4 champion, at 11 a.m. Saturday at Handy Park, 2143 Oakmont Ave. in Orange.
La Verne's bats set the tone early, scoring six runs in the top of the first inning. Jordan Abernathy's three-run homer started the surge.
Cory Kurkierwicz and Forrest Fulgenzi followed with back-to-back base hits. After Kurkierwicz scored on a wild pitch, Mark Kruse pounded a two-run single to center that scored Fulgenzi and Chad Mellor.
