Whittier takes advantage in 4-2 victory

WHITTIER - The Whittier All-Stars are one win away from advancing to the Pony 14 Zone tournament.

Whittier beat Heartwell (Lakewood) 4-2 and will play tournament favorite Long Beach on Tuesday night at 7:30 for the championship of the Super Region Tournament at York Park.

Whittier was aggressive at the plate and on the bases, forcing Heartwell to commit eight errors and allowing Whittier to score four unearned runs for the win.

"We kept our kids in line and the emotion out of it," Whittier manager Tony Chiazza said. "They're (Heartwell) emotion kind of affected it. That's why we got the win."

Trailing 1-0, Whittier scored a pair of unearned runs in the third inning to take the lead for good.

Cody Stieg struck out to lead off the inning but catcher Robbie Mendez dropped the ball. Mendez's throw to first was wild and Stieg was on base.
