LOS ANGELES - The Charter Cove American Legion Post 755 baseball team dropped the hammer on its 6th Area Playoffs competition Sunday at UCLA.
Charter Cove, getting two hits and two RBIs each from Matt Winkler and Matt Ayers, completed a dominant four-game sweep of the tournament with a 13-3 victory over Loyola in the championship game, which was halted after seven innings due to the 10-run rule.
Charter Cove, which features 15 players who won the past two CIF-Southern Section Division IV titles for Charter Oak and Northview high schools, improved to 25-0 and advanced to the California State championships in Yountville for the second consecutive season.
The Covina-based team, which finished third at state last year, opens the state tournament Saturday at 9 a.m. against the 5th Area champions at the Yountville Veterans Home. The state tournament runs through Aug. 7.
"It took a couple of innings for us to wake up this morning," Charter Cove coach Jon Garkow said
