WALNUT - For a team that hadn't played in almost a month, the Chandler Blaze of Arizona Pony 11-year-old baseball squad looked mighty sharp Saturday.
Arizona opened the first round of the Bronco-11 West Zone tournament by scoring three runs in the first two innings en route to a 7-0 victory over Walnut at Walnut Valley Creekside Park.
Arizona continues in today's winner's bracket at 7:30 p.m. against Southern California Southeast champion Redlands.
Walnut's path to a possible championship will have to go through the loser's bracket today at 5 against Northern California entry Blossom Valley.
The Blaze wasted no time in jumping ahead Saturday.
Leadoff batter Justin Mohler singled and took third one out later on a single by pitcher Kyle Gibbs.
Arizona's next batter, cleanup hitter Jeremy Dowd, sent a first-pitch grounder to Walnut's Freddy Gomez. The second baseman made a clean flip to shortstop Jacob Johnson, who then threw low to first baseman David Michel
