Trojans won't be wearing black this season

Could USC wear an alternate uniform this season?

That was a question after the athletic department began selling black-and-gold USC jerseys that are identical to the Trojans' cardinal-and-white jerseys.

But USC coach Pete Carroll said Wednesday he would not allow an alternate uniform.

"There's no way I would allow it," Carroll said.

Several years ago, Nike asked USC to wear an alternate uniform for one game, but Carroll rejected the idea. Virginia Tech was one of several schools that agreed to the change.

"I'm not going to change anything," Carroll said. On the sidelines

Offensive lineman Jeff Byers, the only returning starter, is out with an enlarged spleen but said he would like to be back within a week.

"I've been sick for a couple of weeks," he said. "I really feel like I'm letting the guys down."

Byers said his spleen shrank 1.5 centimeters Wednesday.
