UCLA junior tailback Christian Ramirez, who was to contend for carries in an inexperienced backfield, is academically ineligible and will miss the 2008 season.
Ramirez averaged 5.2 yards on 19 carries last season, and was to battle with several others, including Raymond Carter and Aundre Dean, to be Kahlil Bell's primary backup.
Because Ramirez did not red-shirt, he still has two years of eligibility remaining after the season. However, in a carefully worded release, UCLA did not say Ramirez would red- shirt this season.
"This is unfortunate for Christian and for our team" Bruins coach Rick Neuheisel said via a statement. "I'm sure Christian will work hard to ensure this situation does not occur again."
Also, UCLA announced starting strong safety Bret Lockett was suspended for the Sept. 1 season opener against Tennessee. The Daily News first reported last week Lockett was suspended for a violation of the team's academic policy
