Former Muir coach Steelhead left legacy

Ben Steelhead, a sports fixture in the Pasadena area for more than four decades, was 80 when he died last month, but not forgotten by those who knew him best, like former Muir colleagues Jim Brownfield and Gary Talbert.

Steelhead spent most of his high school coaching days at Muir and Blair from the 1960s to the mid-90s.

In addition to football, Steelhead coached track, gymnastics, tennis, and basketball at Muir, then later became athletic director at Blair.

Steelhead was an assistant football coach at Muir when he recommended Brownfield, who took over as the Mustangs' head football coach in 1965.

Brownfield coached Muir football for a couple of years, then left to take the head coaching job at Loyola University (now Loyola Marymount). Brownfield returned in the late '70s for another stint at Muir.

But Steelhead succeeded Brownfield as head coach at Muir in 1967.
