This season: He was the lone area athlete to advance to the state tournament. He was seeded second but lost in the quarterfinals to Jose Mendoza of Selma under trying circumstances. His coach, Louie Madrigal, died just before the tournament. Marquez then lost in the first consolation match to finish out of medal contention. The defeats were his first in more than 15 consecutive matches. He finished the season 39-8. He won the CIF-Southern Section Central Division and Masters titles and was undefeated in both tournaments. He also won the Mission Valley League title.
What he said: "State was really trying without my coach (Madrigal), but I had to put my best foot forward. I certainly was thinking about it."
