What he did: Madrigal was the only coach to have an athlete reach the state tournament this season. Unfortunately, he did not see Adrian Marquez wrestle for the final time in high school. Madrigal, 51, died on Feb. 27, a night before the tournament, of apparent natural causes. The program became one of the most recognized in the CIF-Southern Section. Rosemead won CIF-SS individual team titles in 1988 and 2004 and a dual meet championship in '02. During his tenure, the Panthers had 17 CIF-SS champions, three state champions (Michael Kawamura, '95; Hector Torres, '97-98) and one senior national champion (Manuel Rivera, '03).
What others said: "It's absolutely devastating. He's one of those guys who put everything into the school and the Rosemead program," athletic director Marc Harsay said.
