Yes on Prop. 8
The "Our View" (Oct. 9), advocating a "no" vote on Proposition 8 fails to provide any convincing argument for changing the historical understanding of marriage in California.
It only wonders how we can stand in the way of love. Love may be of great concern from a religious or personal viewpoint, but it is hardly high on the list from a state perspective.
The state does have an interest in recognizing and regulating marriage. Of its various reasons, two are preeminent. In order to continue, a society has to propagate itself and it has a stake in the development of its next generation.
On the first score, same-sex marriage simply cannot reproduce itself. With the raising of children, the overwhelming conclusion of thousands of studies concludes that the best environment to raise children is in an intact family with a father and mother present. On both accounts, same-sex marriage fails the test
