Tone down rhetoric

Re J. W. Bushbaum's letter (Oct. 2): This letter highlighted a point that I feel is the foundation for what is wrong with our political system (and creates many of society's divisions).

Too often, we focus our attention only on the negative aspects of our opponents without holding our side to the same standards.

Our willingness to see only the faults of our opponents and turn a hypocritical eye to our side is a human attribute that is as easily spotted in alumni discussions, neighborhood meetings, youth sports and academics as it is in politics.

This human instinct to protect those that we view as one of our own, and cast aspersions on those that are different, provides the canvas on which the political parties paint their masterpieces of deception.
