Mission marks milestone - San Gabriel landmark to host celebration

SAN GABRIEL - A celebration of the 237th anniversary of the San Gabriel Mission kicks off at 6 p.m. this evening with the ringing of the mission bells and a blessing of the grounds.

La Fiesta de San Gabriel celebrates the first Spanish mission in Los Angeles, and will consist of three evenings of activities, including Masses and re-enactments of historic events surrounding the mission.

"It's a great time for everybody in the community to come together and celebrate our history and the things we've done over the past 237 years," said San Gabriel Mayor Harry Baldwin. "Our community has changed over the years but everybody celebrates together because San Gabriel is the place where everything began."

The fiesta is held on Labor Day weekend to commemorate the founding of the mission in September 1771, said San Gabriel Administrative Services Analyst Cynthia Smith.
