Visitors to Napa Valley are sometimes surprised to find that the area's famous cabernet sauvignon grapes produce a rich tawny port at Prager Port Works in St. Helena.
In its current release, called Noble Companion ($50), Prager blends five vintages of cabernet sauvignon, the oldest being 1991.
Tawny ports are relatively soft and often easier to drink than vintage ports.
Winemaker Peter Prager says, "It's made in the classic tawny style and is one of our most popular ports."
Only 312 cases of the Noble companion were made, and consequently it's not easy to find.
In the Los Angeles area, Wally's Wine & Spirits, 2107 Westwood Blvd., West Los Angeles, (310) 475-0606 carries Prager's petite sirah Royal Escort ($74.99) and white Aria chardonnay ($49.99) ports but no Noble Companion.
However, those surprised Napa visitors already will have discovered it at the Prager tasting room, 1281 Lewelling Lane in St. Helena. And the rest of us can order it online from www.pragerport.com
