Alpine-shooshing bulldogs practice for Rose Parade

PACOIMA - If a bulldog can skate, it can probably snowboard.

At least that is the theory behind the Rose Parade float sponsored by the Natural Balance pet food company.

Last year, the company's float featuring two bulldogs on skateboards - with the pop hit tune "Who Let the Dogs Out" blaring on speakers - was a smash hit along the parade route.

This year, the company is stepping it up a notch: Its float design includes an alpine theme featuring five bulldogs shushing down a ramp on snowboards.

But the company is four bulldogs short. Only one, 4-year-old Tillman, is returning from last year. So on Friday, the company held auditions for snowboarding bulldogs at its float staging area in Pacoima - and about 40 dogs showed, said Natural Balance spokeswoman Betsy Martin.
