ANAHEIM - When Gary Matthews Jr. was playing every day, he was willing to play through the pain in his left knee. When it became obvious he was going to spend a lot of time in the second half of the season watching Juan Rivera play, Matthews decided he needed to get some answers.
Matthews underwent an MRI on his troublesome left knee Thursday and met with Angels' medical director Dr. Lewis Yocum Saturday to discuss the results and treatment options. According to Matthews, the MRI showed the expected inflammation in the patella tendon as well as a small tear.
Matthews has been dealing with patellar tendinitis since last season but the tear was a new development since MRIs were taken last fall and this spring.
