Dice-K back for Sox

Referring to this week's three-game series between the Red Sox and Los Angeles Angels as a "preview" of their impending American League Division Series makes for nice hype, but is fundamentally silly.



There is little that might happen in a relatively meaningless mid-September series that could effect what happens in the playoffs -- unless a beanball war erupts and the ensuing brawl spawns physical casualties and deeply held vows of revenge.



Which isn't to suggest that the series, which opens tonight at Fenway Park, isn't worth noting.

Most notably, the series opener will feature Daisuke Matsuzaka making his first big-league start in three months, presumably offering at least a preliminary indication of his postseason status, if not his postseason promise.
