Patriots stressing need to bottle up Reed

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. - There weren't too many New England Patriots doing any talking at Gillette Stadium on Wednesday. But when they did, the two words most mentioned were Ed Reed.

As in the Baltimore Ravens five-time Pro Bowl free safety. He's long been the apple of Patriots coach Bill Belichick's eye when it comes to defensive players in the National Football League.

I don't think there's anybody, probably anybody better in the game that I've seen who can disguise his ability to read the quarterback and make plays, Belichick said. Sometimes it's the rout, sometimes it's the formation.

On top of all that, he has this burst and acceleration to the football, great hands, timing, ball skills. You put it all together and he gets around a lot of balls, and the quarterback has to know that every time it leaves his hand . . .

That Reed may end up being the receiver.
