HANOVER - For every miracle victory, there's a heartbreaking defeat, and a pair of area teams figured in both at Sunday's Class I-M-S Indoor Track and Field Championships at Dartmouth College's Leverone Field House.
For the Souhegan High School boys the Class I title, which they would share with track power Lebanon, came totally out of the blue.
Everyone knew Souhegan senior Michael Peret was capable of outscoring most teams all by himself. What they didn't know is others would step up for the Sabers, including the school's 4x400 meter relay that was seeded 12th coming in and finished sixth.
That point, was the difference between a one-point loss and sharing a championship.
For the defending champion Milford girls there was the heartbreak inherent in any one-point loss. Lebanon edged the Spartans for the title, 53-52.
But Milford coach Mike Wright had plenty to celebrate when the day was over, including a phenomenal performance from freshman distance runner Courtney Hawkins
