A new Concord Hospital initiative is relying on donor breast milk to meet the nutritional needs of its youngest patients.
The hospital is the first in New England to offer human donor milk as a standard of care for babies whose mothers cannot produce milk themselves. The program, offered to patients free of charge, has been well-received since it launched in October, said Jan Greer-Carney, the hospital's director of nutrition.
Breastfeeding and human milk benefit infants' immunologic and physical development in a number of ways, Greer-Carney said.
A baby introduced to human milk can absorb and digest vital proteins more easily than a baby fed formula, which can disrupt the digestive tract. Many of the infants that use the milk are either premature or have other health problems, she said, so providing them with the additional nutrients in the earliest stage of development is critical
