Cause of 5-alarm fire in historic city building is probed

NASHUA - The city fire marshal on Monday continued to investigate the cause of a weekend fire that severely damaged a three-story building at 45 Pine St., though fire officials said the blaze did not appear to be suspicious.

The fire appeared to have gutted the top two stories of the 110-year-old brick Labine building, but there was no official word yet on whether the entire structure would have to be demolished.

Meanwhile, the local American Red Cross chapter was helping two families whose apartments in the building were destroyed.

No one was injured in the five-alarm fire that broke out about 3 a.m. Sunday.

On Monday morning, city fire and building officials said at least part of the building would have to be torn down, and the building is uninhabitable.
