Podcast advertising is a creative and unique way to reach an engaged and targeted audience. Audio ads can provide a rich and captivating experience that cannot be achieved with a banner advertisement, and at a much lower cost than video production. Here are a few tips to get you started in developing creative and effective scripts for your podcast advertising campaign.

A Standard Podcast Advertisement
Below is an example of the structure for a typical podcast advertisement to get you started. We encourage you to be creative and to develop something more unique than this basic template, but this can be a good starting point. A typical 15-second message includes the sponsor’s name, a catch phrase and some type of enticing call to action at the end.

Brief is Better
Your ad should be no more than 20 seconds. Keep your message brief and to the point. Podcast listeners usually won't bother fast-forwarding through short ads. If your ad is longer, try breaking it up into multiple smaller audio clips that can be dispersed across multiple podcasts.

Vary Your Message
Listeners may get bored with the same ads playing over and over and may start to tune them out. Try creating different versions of your ad to keep the message engaging and effective.

Be Creative
Podcasting is a fairly low-cost advertising medium, so don’t be afraid to get creative by developing multiple ads. You can create time-specific ads around a holiday or current event. Or, create special promotions or discounts. Try creating several ads, each featuring a different use or benefit of your product.

Target Audience Micro-Segments
It’s easy to create multiple podcast advertisements that appeal to different customer micro-segments of the main audience. It can be a particular topic of interest or target listeners that commute or work out at the gym. By tailoring your message to smaller niche segments, overall effectiveness and Return on Investment (ROI) can be improved

Create Brand Recognition and Awareness
Online advertising is about more than just getting clicks. Building your brand and the awareness of your brand with a new audience can be just as important for long-term success. When a customer is ready to make a purchasing decision, you want them to recognize your brand not your competitors'. The flexibility of podcast advertising enables you to test and adjust your message until you find what works. Use your podcast advertisement to get feedback on your product or service. Develop a poll or ask users to respond to a survey.
