USC played this past basketball season without two scholarships after being forced to take an NCAA-mandated reduction because three players did not graduate last year, according to figures released Tuesday.
Many schools that failed to meet the minimum Academic Progress Rate score will be penalized scholarships for next season, but USC coach Tim Floyd elected for an immediate reduction last fall.
"We took the hit this year," said USC associate athletic director Magdi El Shahawy, who is in charge of student-athlete academic services.
USC's APR score of 804 was 121 points below the minimum-acceptable mark because guards Nick Young and Gabe Pruitt dropped out of school immediately after declaring they would leave early for the NBA draft.
"They went 0 for 2 despite our efforts and talks. They didn't finish the semester," El Shahawy said.
Additionally, guard Lodrick Stewart dropped out of school without finishing classes his senior year
