New faces join Bruin teams

Alex Stepheson is transferring from North Carolina to be closer to his family, the school announced Friday.

The move was rumored for a long time. Stepheson was granted a release from North Carolina and will transfer to a school near his home. That school could be UCLA.

Stepheson, a 6-foot-9, 235-pound power forward, was recruited by the Bruins out of Harvard-Westlake of Studio City. Last year, Stepheson went home during the basketball season because his father was dealing with an undisclosed illness.

"My family is dealing with some health challenges at this time and as a result I have made the decision to transfer to be closer to home," Stepheson said in a UNC press release. "The two years I have spent as a Tar Heel have been great. My teammates, Coach (Roy) Williams and his staff and the whole Carolina family are the best.
