PHILADELPHIA - UCLA center Alfred Aboya was amazed with Virginia Commonwealth guard Eric Maynor's ability to consistently put pressure on the defense, and to create scoring chances for his teammates.
And for all but eight seconds, Maynor showed why he is projected as a first-round NBA draft pick.
However, those eight seconds made all the difference Thursday in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.
Maynor had the ball for those eight ticks, but was so closely guarded by UCLA's Darren Collison that he could not get an open shot.
Instead, Maynor's 15-foot forced shot at the buzzer was short, and allowed the sixth-seeded Bruins to escape with a 65-64 East Regional victory against No.11 seed VCU at the Wachovia Center.
"Everybody knew he was going to take the last shot," Collison said. "That's what was happening all day long."
The Bruins, who led by nine points with four minutes remaining, will play No. 3 seed Villanova at 10 a.m. Saturday in the second round
