NEWHALL - Westlake High's baseball team had to deal with a heat wave Thursday. And the weather was pretty hot, too.
The visiting Warriors proved no match for Hart of Newhall's hard-throwing pitching duo of Michael Montgomery and Trevor Bauer, both of whom surpassed 90 mph on various speed guns, as third-seeded Hart cruised to a 5-1 victory in the first round of the Southern Section Div. I playoffs.
Montgomery, a senior left-hander who is among the nation's top professional prospects, held Westlake (15-14) to one earned run on five singles while striking out seven in five innings.
Bauer, a junior right-hander, earned his second save by pitching two perfect innings with two strikeouts.
"We had a game plan going in to get some hits because we knew how good their pitchers were," Westlake's Cutter Dykstra said. "We didn't hit the ball like we needed to. Hart came out and played like they really wanted it."
Montgomery (8-1) has a 1.24 ERA and 92 strikeouts in 62 innings
