Owners big believers Gayego can take down Big Brown

Whether you think Gayego has a shot in Saturday's Preakness Stakes or not, give the colt's connections credit for having the courage to ignore his poor Kentucky Derby effort and give the son of Gilded Time another chance against Big Brown.

If Gayego was my horse, I'd keep him home and shoot for the Affirmed Handicap on June15 and the Swaps Stakes on July 12 at Hollywood Park. That's the safe bet. Big Brown will be 3,000 miles away and Gayego would be one of the favorites.

But Gayego's owners and trainer, Paulo Lobo, are chalking up that Derby thumping - he finished 17th, 36MD+,%30,%55,%703/MD-,%0,%55,%704 lengths behind Big Brown - as an aberration. They're hoping that a sluggish start and a troubled trip were the cause of Gayego's worst race in six career starts. He'd finished no worse than second in his previous five races, including a victory in the Arkansas Derby on April 12.
