SANTA CLARITA - A former munitions site that is still being cleaned up in the heart of the city could become a housing, retail and commercial project, according to plans submitted Tuesday by the developer.
SunCal Santa Clarita LLC, a partnership between SunCal Companies and Cherokee Investment Partners, is proposing a development called Midtown on the nearly 1,000 acres better known as the Whittaker-Bermite site.
The project consists of roughly 3,500 housing units, more than 40 acres of parks and recreation facilities and more than 400 acres of permanent open space.
"It's a terrific location in the center of the city," said SunCal spokesman Joe Aguirre. "It's the largest parcel of undeveloped land that is left in that area."
The site was a munitions production facility from World War II through the Korean and Vietnam conflicts and was closed in the late 1980s. Contaminants have been found in the soil and groundwater
